  Carnelian is a chalcedony group of quartz.   The most favorable pieces are a deep red to red-orange hue.  Carnelian has a long storied past, and was once considered strictly the property of the noble class. Carnelian crystalizes from silica-rich solutions colored by iron oxide impurities.  It's name is believed to come from a variety of cherries known as kornel.  Carnelian is one of the twelve gemstones mentioned in the bible as appearing on the breastplate of Aaron.
